Why a GIMP Photo Layer Will Not Move During Alignment
By ImgHeal · Updated
A repair patch can stay stubbornly still even when its pixels are visible and the Move tool appears active. Before dragging harder or recreating the patch, check the intended target and its locks. The obstacle may be a deliberate document setting that protected an earlier alignment.

Confirm which object should move
Select the layer by its thumbnail or name in GIMP's Layers dialog and identify its relationship to the repair. Check whether you meant to move photo pixels, a mask, a selection, or another object. Tool options can affect the target chosen by a click on the canvas. Record the original placement and preserve a duplicate project before changing a documented reference layer. Moving the wrong component can produce a plausible-looking repair whose mask no longer agrees with the source.
Inspect the relevant lock separately
Review the selected layer's lock controls and identify a position lock rather than assuming every lock has the same purpose. A lock protecting pixels from painting solves a different problem from one protecting placement. If you decide movement is appropriate, change only the needed control and try a small reversible translation. Inspect groups or linked components if more than one item moves. Do not flatten or rescale the document simply to bypass a position setting; those actions can discard useful repair structure.
Verify alignment before restoring protection
Use a stable source feature to judge the patch position, such as a seam or architectural edge that was genuinely visible. Compare the mask and neighboring layers after the adjustment. Return the appropriate protection once the intended placement is confirmed, and add a clear layer name explaining its role. Save the working project and inspect a separate viewing export. If a generated ImgHeal version is also being considered, assess it against the same source reference rather than treating the manually aligned patch as proof of missing historical detail.
Check the working document
- The intended moving object was selected explicitly.
- Only the relevant position control was changed.
- The patch and mask were reviewed together.

Questions about this restoration task
Should every lock be disabled to make alignment easier?
No. Identify the control affecting the intended operation. Retain protections that still serve the project and verify which components move during a reversible test.
