Why a Photoshop Repair Patch Can Move Away from Its Mask
By ImgHeal · Updated
A patch may align nicely until you move it, then reveal a strange slice of background. The layer and its mask can have different positions. Diagnose that relationship before stretching the patch or painting extra content into what appears to be a new hole.

Locate the two independent structures
Look at the repair layer and its mask thumbnails and identify which thumbnail is active. A layer supplies image content; its mask controls how much of that content is visible. When they are unlinked, a movement can change one without moving the other. Compare the subject landmarks with the untouched reference and inspect the mask boundary separately. A misaligned mask may expose valid patch pixels in the wrong place rather than indicate that the patch itself contains missing information.
Restore alignment before further retouching
Retain the current document state, then select the object that actually needs repositioning. Move it using clear surviving landmarks, such as an intact seam on both sides of a tear. Avoid aligning solely by a smooth patch edge, which may not correspond to any original scene feature. Once the content and coverage agree, restore the intended linked behavior for later movements. Test a small reversible move to establish what travels together; the interface state is more useful than guessing from the final composite.
Review what the displacement exposed
Inspect any region that became visible while the patch was separated from its mask. Remove emergency paint or broad blending added only to conceal that temporary misalignment. Check the repair at ordinary display size and a close crop, then save the editable project separately from the source. If the patch came from an AI-restored version, confirm its actual detail before accepting the alignment. A technically well-positioned layer can still contain invented texture or a changed facial feature.
Check the working document
- Layer content and mask coverage were examined separately.
- Alignment used surviving scene landmarks.
- Linked movement was tested after correction.

Questions about this restoration task
Is linking a layer and mask always preferable?
Link them when they should move together. Independent positioning can be useful for a deliberate task, but record that choice so later movements do not create an unnoticed mismatch.
