Why a Photo Patch Changes Color When Pasted into Photoshop
By ImgHeal · Updated
A patch may look right in one document and change when pasted into another. Different profile interpretations or conversion choices can contribute. Diagnose that handoff before treating the patch as faded, repainting its color, or assuming that its pixel values alone determine the visible appearance.

Record both document profiles
Keep the source patch and destination document open and note their embedded or assigned profiles. Distinguish a properly tagged image from an untagged one whose interpretation is uncertain. Inspect the current color-management policy and any profile-mismatch prompt used during pasting. A choice to preserve numbers is not identical to a choice intended to preserve appearance. Do not assign a familiar profile merely because its preview seems attractive; investigate the actual source information before changing its interpretation.
Compare a controlled paste
On duplicate documents, repeat the paste with an explicitly considered documented profile choice. Keep layer mode, opacity, and other adjustments steady. Inspect a plausible neutral region and several colored features, not only a small sample point. If the new candidate matches better, confirm that the cause was the profile handoff rather than a hidden adjustment in one document. A matching numeric readout across different color spaces does not by itself prove the colors should look identical.
Review the integrated repair and export
After resolving the handoff, remove any earlier tint compensation added just to disguise the mismatch. Reassess the patch next to its surrounding source and check both bright and dark areas. Save the corrected editable project and a viewing export with the intended embedded profile. Reopen the export in a suitable ordinary viewer. Keep the original patch unchanged, especially if it was supplied by a relative or archive. Profile handling can improve consistency between documents; it cannot establish historically certain scene colors that the source never recorded reliably.
Check the working document
- Both document profiles and tags were recorded.
- The paste policy was tested independently of layer effects.
- Earlier compensating tints were reassessed.

Questions about this restoration task
Should I preserve color numbers or appearance?
That depends on the documented purpose of the handoff. For an ordinary visual photo repair, understand the profile relationship and test the result rather than choosing by familiar-looking numbers alone.
