Assign or Convert a Photo Color Profile: Which Should You Use?
By ImgHeal · Updated
Assigning a profile changes how existing color numbers are interpreted; converting a profile changes the numbers to represent the image in another color space. Use conversion for a documented destination change. Assignment needs evidence about the source encoding. Neither operation can establish the true historical colors of a faded print or an AI-colorized image.

Establish the source interpretation first
Inspect the embedded profile and ask how the scan or export was produced. Preserve the original file before making any color-management change. If it has a trustworthy embedded profile, do not discard it because a different assignment looks more pleasing. If the profile is absent or wrong, consult capture notes or the supplier. A visually attractive assignment is a hypothesis about encoding, not proof that the selected profile matches the original source values.
Choose the operation that matches the task
In a separate color-managed editor, use its documented conversion workflow when preparing a copy for a different output space. Preview the result and check saturated fabric, neutral areas, and pale faces. Assignment is appropriate only when correcting how existing values should be interpreted and you have a basis for that correction. Avoid using both commands repeatedly without notes; that can make it difficult to reconstruct which appearance was source-based and which came from experimentation.
Save a traceable delivery copy
Retain the source and label the converted output with its destination role. Check that the output carries the intended profile where the format and workflow support embedding. Reopen it in the receiving application and compare at equivalent scale. Record substantial clipping or appearance differences before using the copy as a restoration input. Color conversion prepares file interpretation; it does not reverse physical fading or authenticate colors invented by a generative restoration.
Before you accept this working copy
- The source profile is identified or marked unknown.
- Assignment and conversion have different reasons.
- The exported destination copy was reopened.

Questions about this restoration task
Can I assign sRGB to every photo to make it web-ready?
Blind assignment can change appearance without a valid source interpretation. When the source profile is known, make a checked conversion to the destination space on a separate copy.
