What Does the Output Black Slider Do to an Old Photo?
By ImgHeal · Updated
An output black adjustment raises the darkest output value instead of deciding which source values become black. It can soften a harsh presentation on a duplicate, but it does not restore shadow detail already discarded earlier. Compare the original and the adjustment so a milky appearance is not mistaken for recovered information.

Separate input and output controls
Open Levels in a separate editor on an editable working copy. Identify the input controls associated with the source distribution and the output range controls. Adobe documents these as different parts of the mapping. Test a small change with the preview visible. Do not use an arbitrary number as an archival requirement or apply the same setting to every family image; paper tone, capture contrast, and intended display vary substantially.
Check whether detail actually returns
Compare dark hair, suits, and shaded faces before and after the change. If those regions were already reduced to a single value, raising that value makes the patch lighter without recreating internal structure. Return to an earlier source or adjustment when information was clipped. If useful variation survives, an output change may make viewing more comfortable, but it should be described as tonal presentation rather than recovery of authentic texture.
Evaluate the whole tonal relationship
Inspect the darkest region alongside midtones and highlights at normal display size. Watch for a washed-out border or a local repaired patch that becomes conspicuous. Keep the adjustment reversible and save any display-specific version separately from the retained source. Reopen the export before sharing or uploading it. A dark screen or unsuitable print workflow should be investigated independently instead of permanently changing every copy to compensate for an unverified viewing problem.

Questions about this restoration task
Can lifting output black undo crushed shadows?
It cannot recreate distinctions already removed from the file. Revisit the source or earlier adjustment if the shadow information was clipped before this step.
