How to Improve a Dark Photo Scan
By ImgHeal
Reveal usable shadow detail while checking noise and lost highlights.
Check whether the scan is too dark
If the print shows detail that the file does not, try a better capture before editing. Save a capture that retains both bright and dark information. A file with completely black areas may contain no useful detail to brighten.
Lift tones gradually
Adjust exposure or shadows on a duplicate in small steps. Watch light clothing and skies as well as the face you want to reveal. Brightening dark regions can expose grain, color noise, and compression artifacts that were less noticeable before.
Review at viewing size
Use only enough noise reduction to make the image comfortable to view. Check that hair and fabric have not become smooth patches. If AI creates detail in formerly unreadable shadows, treat that detail as inferred and compare it with any alternate photograph available.
Before you finish
- Look for a better capture first.
- Protect highlights during brightening.
- Check shadow noise and invented texture.
