Why a Floating Selection Can Block Other GIMP Photo Edits
By ImgHeal · Updated
A pasted repair can leave GIMP focused on a temporary floating selection. Other layers may seem unavailable even though the project is intact. Find that temporary object and decide where its pixels belong before trying to remove locks or repeatedly paste another copy of the same patch.

Find the temporary layer in the document
Inspect the Layers dialog for a floating selection or floating layer and compare it with the patch you just pasted. GIMP documents that other image work is restricted while this temporary object persists. Note its location, opacity, and destination relationship. A floating item is different from the ordinary dotted boundary of a saved selection. Keep the copied source available, and avoid stacking repeated pastes merely because the rest of the project appears unresponsive.
Choose anchoring or an independent layer
If the patch should become part of its intended destination, inspect that destination before using the documented Anchor Floating Layer or Mask command. If you need to reposition, mask, or revise the patch independently, consider To New Layer instead. Work on a duplicate project when the destination is uncertain. Anchoring can combine pixels with an existing layer, so confirm the patch placement first rather than treating the command as a harmless dismissal of a warning. Availability depends on whether a floating selection actually exists.
Resume editing and inspect the patch boundary
After resolving the temporary object, explicitly select the layer you intended to edit. Make a reversible test away from an important facial feature and confirm that the expected controls work. Review the patch against the retained source for doubled edges, mismatched grain, or accidental placement over another person. Save the editable GIMP project and make a separate viewing export. Record a substantial reconstruction if the pasted region replaces information that the original did not preserve, even when the finished composite appears convincing.
Check the working document
- A floating object was distinguished from a selection boundary.
- Its intended destination was checked before anchoring.
- Independent editability was retained when needed.

Questions about this restoration task
Does every paste create the same kind of temporary object?
Paste behavior varies by command and GIMP version. Inspect the Layers dialog. Use floating-selection instructions only when that temporary object is actually present.
