Recover FSA Photo Assignment Context from Caption Sheets

By ImgHeal · Updated

FSA–OWI caption sheets can connect individual photographs with a wider assignment. Begin with an image reference and the photographer's documented work. The surviving written records are not complete, and a neighboring negative is not automatically a picture of the same family or place.

Establish the image's collection reference

Save the full Library of Congress item record, including its negative or reproduction identifiers and any supplied assignment information. Record the title as cataloged while separating it from your own proposed identification. The Library's written-records guide describes caption files and other administrative material related to the photographic unit. Follow that finding route rather than searching a caption phrase across unrelated web copies. A later publication may crop the picture or shorten its description, concealing the identifiers needed for assignment research.

Read the sheet as a group of records

Inspect the relevant caption sheet or linked finding aid and compare the exact image numbers. Note whether the sheet names an individual frame, a group, or an entire assignment. Preserve any correction or uncertainty in the wording. An assignment can span several locations and subjects, so do not distribute one frame's names across every nearby picture. Record which pages you examined and whether the sequence is complete enough to support the proposed relationship.

Use assignment context without inventing a sitter

Compare the source caption with the photograph's visible evidence and any independent record. If the written records add a location or occasion, cite the exact sheet and frame connection. If a person remains unnamed, retain that limit. Keep the untouched image and your research note together, distinguishing a source statement from a later inference. A restoration can create a viewing derivative, but altered faces or reconstructed signs must not become the reason for claiming that a neighboring caption belongs to this image.

Keep the evidence trail usable

  • Retain the exact image and negative identifiers.
  • Match the frame to its caption-sheet entry.
  • Do not transfer names across an assignment automatically.
