Set an Omeka Photo Thumbnail Without Reordering Its Views
By ImgHeal · Updated
Omeka S primary media and media order answer different questions. One chooses the leading representation used in places such as thumbnails; the other determines the sequence of attached files. Check both when a photo's back or restoration unexpectedly appears first in a gallery.

Write the intended viewing sequence
List the files attached to one sample item and state what a visitor should encounter: perhaps untouched front, complete back, and restored viewing copy. Choose a thumbnail that represents the object clearly without hiding its edited status. Keep a screenshot or short note of the current arrangement before changing it. Confirm the actual media titles, because several uploads with similar filenames can make a mistaken selection look like a display bug.
Adjust the two choices separately
The Omeka S media manual distinguishes selecting primary media from changing file order. Inspect the item's media controls and make one deliberate change at a time. Reordering should preserve the relationship between front and back, while primary-media selection should suit the site's browsing layout. Do not delete and reupload a file simply to move it to the beginning. That can create unnecessary record changes and break references to the existing media resource. Retain stable object identifiers during the adjustment.
| Choice | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| Media sequence | In what order should the attached views appear? |
| Primary media | Which representation leads supported item displays? |
| Custom thumbnail asset | Has a separate explicit thumbnail been assigned? |
Inspect more than one public presentation
Review the item's full page, a browse card, and any exhibit block using it. Check whether a separately configured thumbnail overrides the expected choice. Sign out for a visitor-style test rather than relying entirely on administrative previews. Verify that labels distinguish the restored viewing copy wherever it appears. A successful thumbnail adjustment does not establish the right gallery order, so complete both checks before sharing the exhibit link. Record the final sequence with the publication notes to make future media replacements easier to review.

Questions about this restoration task
Will choosing the last file as primary move it to the top?
Omeka S documents primary-media choice separately from ordering. Check and adjust the sequence directly when that is your intended outcome.
