Why a Medium-Format Film Scan Can Cut Off Part of the Picture

By ImgHeal · Updated

A missing head or chopped landscape may come from automatic frame detection rather than the original camera composition. Medium-format negatives can use several frame shapes. Check the full preview before assuming that restoration must invent the area beyond the scan.

Compare the scan with the complete frame

View the negative on a suitable light source or ask the scanning service for a full-frame preview. Identify whether the supposedly missing subject is actually visible on the film. Record the frame shape and the relevant film strip. If the camera never recorded the area, changing a crop setting cannot reveal it; a border extension would be a creative reconstruction instead.

Check the selected film format

Automatic thumbnail detection may use a different medium-format size from the original frame. Read the scanner's instructions for choosing the correct format or moving to a full-area preview. Do not assume every frame on an old roll has the proportions of a common modern print. Keep the preview's boundaries visible while comparing them with the frame edges.

Select the intended region deliberately

Where the scanning software permits manual regions, include the complete image and a small reference border without extending into the next frame. Ask a lab to rescan with the frame boundary shown if you cannot control this yourself. Review the actual output file, because a preview can show a region that a later automatic crop changes before saving.

Keep the complete source for future uses

Save the full-frame scan even if a narrower crop looks attractive for sharing. Check all edges for newly revealed people, objects, and inscriptions before restoring it. Name the earlier incomplete copy clearly so it is not chosen by mistake later. Work from the recovered recorded area, and reserve any decorative crop for a separate delivery version. Record the successful frame selection for the remaining roll.

Check before restoring

  • Confirm that missing content exists on the film.
  • Match detection settings to the real frame format.
  • Inspect saved output, including all four edges.
