How to Keep Exposure Consistent While Copying a Photo Series
By ImgHeal · Updated
Prevent automatic exposure shifts from making a set of copied family photographs difficult to compare.
Establish a reference exposure
Begin with a representative print under your final lighting. Check that pale borders and dark image regions retain visible information. Automatic exposure can change when a dark portrait replaces a bright landscape, even though the lights have not moved. A reference frame helps you recognize a capture adjustment rather than a genuine difference between photographs.
Use the controls your camera provides
If your device offers exposure lock or manual exposure, use it according to its instructions and confirm that the lock persists between frames. Some camera apps reset controls when you switch lenses or reopen the app. Watch the displayed settings and take a fresh reference frame after any interruption instead of trusting the earlier state.
Allow justified exceptions
Consistent settings are a starting point, not a reason to clip an unusually bright print or lose an unusually dark one. Inspect difficult originals individually and label any changed exposure. Keep both the standard capture and the adjusted one when useful. That record makes later comparisons more meaningful than forcing every source through identical settings.
Check the series together
Review a contact sheet or a sequence in a separate image viewer before restoration. Look for unexplained jumps in border brightness or color and compare them with your notes. Prepare each ImgHeal upload from the best individual capture. Do not normalize all photographs merely because the display grid looks tidier; original lighting and printing differences can matter.
Before you save this version
- A reference exposure is saved.
- Locks were rechecked after interruptions.
- Exceptions are identified rather than hidden.
