How to Label an AI-Colorized Historical Photo

By ImgHeal · Updated

Add a clear, durable note so viewers can distinguish generated color from the original record.

Collect color evidence

Decide where the image will appear and how captions travel with it. A social post, family archive, printed book, and genealogy site may each need the disclosure in a different field.

Create the colorized version

Use plain wording such as 'AI colorized from a black-and-white scan' and keep the source identifier in the filename or metadata. Do not place the only disclosure in a temporary description that may be removed during download.

Record what remains uncertain

Store the monochrome source beside the color copy and include the label in exports or captions. Record known color references separately from guessed colors.

Check before you finish

  • State that the color was generated.
  • Keep the source identifier attached.
  • Store the monochrome original nearby.
