Which Metadata Date Describes the Scene in an Old Photo?

By ImgHeal · Updated

A newly scanned photograph can look as though it was taken yesterday when an application shows only one date. Keep the meanings of the available metadata fields clear before editing their values.

Identify the date your application shows

Inspect the field label and its help information. A file-system creation time, camera EXIF time, historical content date, and digital creation date can refer to different events. Note the original values before making changes. Do not treat a camera's date on a copy photograph as proof of when the scene happened. A photograph copied in 2026 may show an event from an earlier century, and the software cannot infer that distinction merely from the pixels.

Choose the actual content and digitization fields

IPTC Date Created, mapped to photoshop:DateCreated in XMP, describes the image content's creation. Legacy IIM Digital Creation Date describes the digital representation; editors may not expose it. For a scene known only to be from 1900 and scanned on 26 October 2026, keep 1900 in a supported year-only content field and the exact scan date in a clearly labeled digitization field or note. Never substitute 1 January 1900 for an unknown day. If year-only entry is unsupported, explain the historical date in Description instead.

Compare display order after a sample export

Open an exported copy and observe whether the viewer sorts by the field you intended. Different viewers can prefer different dates, so verify the actual album order rather than changing every historical value to obtain a convenient sequence. Keep a dated note explaining any correction to an earlier metadata entry. For a restored copy, retain the historical date evidence and record the editing date separately. Clear descriptions are more useful than a single tidy date whose meaning has been lost.

Check before sharing this record

  • Record the original field values.
  • Do not invent precision for uncertain dates.
  • Test the album's sorting behavior on one copy.

Questions about this restoration task

Does changing a photo's displayed date fix every embedded date?

No. Applications can maintain several date properties or catalogue values. Inspect the specific fields involved and preserve their meanings rather than assuming one visible date edits them all.
