What to Check When a Downloaded Photo Will Not Open
By ImgHeal · Updated
Separate a failed download, unsupported format, and a damaged image before trying repairs.
Check the file you received
Inspect its name and file size, and confirm that the download finished. A tiny file or a saved web page may not be an image at all. Keep the source available rather than replacing it with the failed download.
Try a compatible viewer
Use an application known to support the actual format. Changing the extension alone does not convert the file. If the original opens but an exported copy does not, repeat the export once with a common supported format and a clear new filename.
Record a reproducible failure
If the issue persists, note the tool, browser, selected export format, and whether a non-sensitive sample fails too. Avoid uploading private files to unrelated repair sites as a first response. Save the working original and stop repeated transformations of the broken copy.
Check before you finish
- Confirm the download is a complete image file.
- Test a viewer that supports its actual format.

Keep the original scan. Upload a separate digital copy, review ImgHeal’s generated result, and decide whether it suits your needs.
