Straighten a Photo Copy from a Known Line with GIMP Measure
By ImgHeal · Updated
GIMP's Measure tool can support a straighten operation from a line you identify. Choose a reference that really should be horizontal or vertical in the copy. A tilted person, sloping ground, or perspective line inside the scene is not automatically evidence that the scan itself is crooked.

Choose the reference carefully
Inspect the complete photograph and distinguish the print edge from scene geometry. A clean rectangular border may support copy alignment, while a torn corner may not. If the original print itself is irregular, record that rather than forcing every edge into a rectangle. Keep an untouched scan and make the straighten trial on a separate working version so the complete captured border remains available for later research.
Measure and preview the operation
GIMP's Measure documentation describes drawing a measurement line and using Straighten controls. Place the line on the selected reference and inspect its endpoints at useful zoom. Read the intended alignment choice rather than assuming the tool knows which direction matters. Preview the result on the proper layer or image target, then check a second independent edge. An apparently precise angle is only as trustworthy as the line you selected.
Inspect the resulting margins
After straightening, check for clipped corners, transparent gaps, and changed framing. Decide separately whether to crop or pad the viewing derivative; do not remove useful inscriptions just to make every margin even. Review faces and writing for resampling effects and save the accepted working version. Record the reference used so someone else can understand the correction. Straightening aligns a chosen captured feature; it does not resolve lens distortion, a curved print, or perspective relationships inside the photographed scene.
Check this workflow before using the result
- Choose a source-supported reference.
- Check measurement endpoints.
- Review margins after straightening.

Questions about this restoration task
Should I straighten using a person's shoulders?
Not automatically. A pose may be tilted in the original scene. Prefer evidence about the copy's alignment, such as a reliable print edge.
