How to Prepare Mounted Slides for Professional Digitization

By ImgHeal · Updated

Organize slide identifiers and orientation notes without taking mounts apart.

Inventory the collection

Record box, carousel, and mount labels before moving slides. Assign stable identifiers that preserve their existing order. Ask the digitization provider how it wants slides supplied and how identifiers will be reflected in delivered filenames.

Discuss capture requirements

Explain whether you need family viewing copies, prints, or detailed archival files. Ask about orientation checks, file formats, and handling of damaged mounts. Do not open, wash, or remount unfamiliar slides merely to make them look cleaner for delivery.

Check the returned files

Compare the file inventory with your slide list and review representative images for mirroring, rotation, and clipped edges. Retain the slides and delivery documentation. Keep any restored copies separate from the provider's original digitization files.

Check before you finish

  • Preserve slide order and mount labels.
  • Check file counts and orientation on return.
