How to Colorize a Photo When You Know the Clothing Colors
By ImgHeal · Updated
Turn family knowledge about clothing into a documented reference for a more grounded colorized copy.
Collect color evidence
Write down who remembers the garment, when they saw it, and the exact areas they can identify. A known blue dress does not automatically establish the color of shoes, trim, or background objects.
Create the colorized version
Use the known color as one anchor while keeping skin, hair, and environment separate. Compare saturation under the source lighting; old indoor photographs should not necessarily look like bright daylight.
Record what remains uncertain
Add the family note to the file record and label all unconfirmed colors as inferred. Preserve both the monochrome source and a version before final color adjustments.
Check before you finish
- Record who supplied the color memory.
- Limit certainty to known garment areas.
- Keep unknown colors labeled as inferred.
