How to Capture Family Stories While Reviewing Old Photos
By ImgHeal · Updated
Keep recollections connected to an image without turning every memory into a confirmed fact.
Show source and edited copies
Let the relative see the original scan beside a restored version. Ask open questions about people, place, and occasion rather than suggesting an answer from generated detail. Note the image identifier at the beginning of each set of notes.
Separate quotation and interpretation
Record what the person remembers and mark uncertainty in their own terms. Keep your later inference in a different field. Ask before recording or sharing sensitive family stories, and agree on who should receive the resulting notes.
Store an accessible record
Keep a plain-text summary linked to the image even if an audio recording also exists. Record the interview date and contributor. Revisit disagreements with additional evidence rather than editing earlier recollections until they appear consistent.
Check before you finish
- Use source images during recollection.
- Separate testimony from later inference.
