How to Choose a Folder Structure for Family Photos
By ImgHeal · Updated
Use a predictable hierarchy that supports albums, people, events, and source-to-restoration links.
Define the record
Choose one primary organizing principle, such as collection or album, rather than duplicating the same master under every person's name. Use the inventory for cross-references.
Apply the system consistently
Within each project, separate source, working, and delivery files. Apply consistent IDs and filenames, and keep album page order when that context matters.
Test that another person can use it
Give the folder map to a relative and ask them to find a source scan and its restored version. Adjust the structure when navigation depends on knowledge only you have.
Check before you finish
- Choose one primary hierarchy.
- Separate source, working, and delivery files.
- Test navigation with another person.
