How to Write Alt Text for a Restored Photo
By ImgHeal · Updated
Describe visible content clearly without inventing identities or burying the reader in editing notes.
Describe the meaningful scene
Start with the people, activity, setting, or object relevant to the page. Use names only when identification is established and appropriate to share. Avoid claiming an exact color or object identity merely because AI supplied a plausible-looking detail.
Separate description from context
Keep a long family history, provenance record, or explanation of AI edits in the visible caption or accompanying text. Alt text should communicate the image's purpose in that page. Include restoration status when it is important to understanding what is shown.
Review with the actual image
Read the description beside the displayed version and check for omissions or unsupported claims. Do not add marketing keywords unrelated to the scene. Retain a fuller archive caption separately so accessibility text does not have to carry every research note.
Check before you finish
- Describe relevant visible content.
- Keep unsupported identities out of the description.
