How to Number Album Pages and Individual Photo Crops

By ImgHeal · Updated

Use identifiers that survive missing pages and later discoveries.

Record existing page numbers

If the album already has numbers, include them in the index without assuming they are complete. Assign a stable capture sequence as well. Note blank or missing pages so a later user can distinguish a deliberate blank from an overlooked capture.

Define crop positions

Use page identifiers plus a consistent photo suffix, such as page-012-photo-c. Record position in words when the layout is irregular. Keep a complete page capture so a misplaced crop can be traced back to its context.

Avoid renumbering after additions

Give newly found pages or photos new stable identifiers and record their relationship separately. Renumbering the whole collection can break captions and previously shared links. Keep display order in a sortable field instead of relying entirely on filenames.

Check before you finish

  • Document blanks and missing pages.
  • Separate stable identifiers from display order.
