How to Use a Yearbook to Research an Old School Photograph
By ImgHeal · Updated
A yearbook may supply names or school context for an old class photograph. Begin with a school and a time window, then keep every possible match attached to the page that supports it.
Establish the school and likely period
Look for a readable school sign, badge, handwritten note, or known pupil whose attendance dates you can investigate. Preserve a full scan before cropping the group. Write the school's historical name as well as any modern name you know. The graduation year, publication year, and date a photograph was taken may differ, so search neighboring years when the first candidate does not fit.
Find the actual yearbook page
Search a library or the relevant yearbook collection by institution and approximate year. Collection coverage varies, and a missing result does not prove that no book exists. When you find a candidate, open the page image and record the book title, year, page, and repository. Read the headings and nearby captions; an alphabetical name list may not follow the left-to-right order of the photograph.
Compare context before facial resemblance
Check the school name, class designation, room, uniforms, teacher, and visible event details. Compare faces using the source images at sensible sizes. Similar hair or clothing alone is a weak identification, particularly among pupils photographed in the same period. Keep a question mark when a name-to-face link is unclear. Generated facial detail in a restoration cannot settle the uncertainty or establish an absent pupil's identity.
Prepare a useful reference pair
Save your own photo ID beside a reference to the yearbook page, following the repository's conditions for copies and sharing. Keep the page context available to family reviewers. If you restore your photograph, attach the research note to the viewing copy rather than embedding an unconfirmed name in its filename. A future correction is much easier when the supporting page and reasoning are easy to locate.
Keep the evidence with the photograph
- Record school, yearbook year, and page.
- Check how captions map to faces.
- Keep uncertain matches labeled as candidates.
