How to Edit a Water-Stained Photo Scan
By ImgHeal
Work on the digital stain while protecting the condition of the original print.
Keep physical treatment separate
This workflow is for an existing digital copy. Do not soak, peel, heat, or flatten a water-damaged print to prepare it for an upload. If the photograph is stuck, flaking, or unstable, seek advice from a photograph conservator before further handling.
Separate discoloration from missing detail
A stain may change the color of visible detail, while another area may have lost its image entirely. Try restrained local tone adjustments where information remains. Reconstructing an empty patch is a different task: any new face, object, or texture there is an interpretation.
Check the stain boundary
Compare edges around the affected region after editing. Watch for halos and abrupt changes in skin tone. Save a version that improves readability without forcing every stained area to match; an imperfect but faithful copy may be more useful for a family record.
Before you finish
- Use a digital copy that is safe to obtain.
- Identify areas with missing image information.
- Review halos around stain edges.
