How to Prepare a Low-Resolution Photo for Printing
By ImgHeal
Estimate print size from pixels and proof an enlargement before ordering.
Start with pixel dimensions
Read the image width and height in pixels. Divide each dimension by the intended print resolution in pixels per inch to estimate a print size. For example, 1800 by 1200 pixels at 300 pixels per inch gives 6 by 4 inches. This is a planning example, not a guarantee of visible sharpness.
Choose the crop first
Match the crop to the print's aspect ratio before resizing. Leave room around faces if the lab trims the edges. Increasing dimensions creates more output pixels, but it does not prove that new details match the original scene.
Order or make a proof
Inspect a small test print at normal viewing distance. Compare skin, fine edges, and texture with the original. Ask the print provider about its file requirements and avoid stacking its automatic enhancement on an already strongly edited version without checking a proof.
Before you finish
- Calculate size from pixel dimensions.
- Match the print aspect ratio.
- Check a proof before a large order.
