How to Review an Edit for Uneven Photo Fading
By ImgHeal · Updated
Treat differently faded regions without forcing the whole image through one correction.
Map the regions
Look for an exposed edge, a pale center, or a shadow left by an album opening. Compare the physical print with the scan when safe. Uneven capture lighting can resemble uneven fading and should be addressed before judging the restoration.
Test local corrections
On a duplicate, make a restrained adjustment to the affected region and use a soft transition. Check an unaffected region at the same time. A global contrast or color change can improve the faded area while making the preserved area look unnatural.
Inspect transitions and identity
Review skin tones and edges crossing the adjusted boundary. Watch for a visible band where the correction stops. Keep a balanced version rather than chasing identical tones everywhere, especially when the surviving image does not support an exact reconstruction.
Check before you finish
- Separate fading from capture lighting.
- Review both corrected and unaffected regions.
