Check Whether a Tropy Web Image Will Be Available Offline
By ImgHeal · Updated
A web image visible in Tropy may still depend on its remote address. Before travelling to work offline, distinguish the project entry from a locally saved source. Keep the repository record and any authorized download together so the file remains understandable when the website is unavailable.

Identify how the image entered the project
Review whether you imported a downloaded file or dragged a static image from a browser. Tropy documents browser-image dragging as a link to the web resource rather than an automatic image download. Record the repository item page as well as the image address. Those links serve different purposes: the item page may carry the description and rights information, while the image link supplies pixels. A cached preview is not reliable evidence that an independent local file exists.
Prepare an authorized local research copy
Use the source institution's download option when its terms permit the intended research use. Keep the downloaded filename, item reference, and access date in a source note. Open the saved file from its folder before adding it to the project, and check that it is the intended image rather than a webpage saved with an image-like name. Do not remove the original repository citation when making a local copy. If downloads are restricted, respect that restriction and plan a connected research session instead of attempting to bypass it.
Rehearse the offline task
On a suitable local copy of the project arrangement, disconnect from the network and open the actual images you will need. Check a detailed area, not only the item thumbnail. Keep a list of resources that still require the network, including linked finding aids and permissions information. Restore connectivity after the test and distinguish any newly downloaded copy from the earlier web-linked item. When preparing an ImgHeal restoration, upload only a copy you have permission to process and keep its original repository provenance with the result; the restoration does not convert restricted material into unrestricted material.
Check this workflow
- Record the item page and image URL separately.
- Verify that an authorized local file opens.
- Test detail access without a network connection.

Questions about this restoration task
Does seeing a thumbnail prove the original is saved locally?
No. A preview can be cached while the full source remains remote. Check the original location and test the file needed for your actual task.
