How to Make a Square Crop from a Family Photo
By ImgHeal · Updated
Create a square viewing copy while retaining the complete original composition.
Identify the essential subjects
List the people and objects that must remain visible. A square crop from a wide group photo may remove family members at the sides. Start with a duplicate and compare the crop against the complete source before making it your shared version.
Move the crop intentionally
Use a locked 1:1 ratio and shift the square to preserve the strongest composition. Avoid enlarging individual subjects independently to make them fit. When the image cannot work as a square, add borders or choose another display layout.
Check small-display behavior
Preview the copy in the destination's actual frame. Some interfaces apply another crop or rounded mask. Keep descriptive captions linked to the complete image, especially when the square version no longer includes everyone named in the original caption.
Check before you finish
- Keep all essential people in view.
- Check any additional destination crop.
