How to Troubleshoot Lines in a Photo Scan

By ImgHeal · Updated

Determine whether streaks come from the scanner, the original print, or a single failed capture.

Identify where the problem begins

Scan a clean blank sheet or another safe document and compare the line position. A mark that stays in exactly the same scanner coordinate likely comes from the equipment or glass, while a mark that moves with the photo belongs to the source.

Create a safe diagnostic copy

Follow the scanner maker's cleaning instructions with the device off, or use another scanner. Do not scrub the photograph to remove a line that exists only in the scan.

Verify the corrected file

Rescan a small test and compare at 100 percent. Keep the first capture until the replacement is complete, and record which scan became the master.

Check before you finish

  • Compare a second test scan.
  • Follow device cleaning guidance.
  • Do not clean the photo for a scanner defect.

Try a restoration on a copy of your photo

Keep the original scan. Upload a separate digital copy, review ImgHeal’s generated result, and decide whether it suits your needs.
