Resize or Compress: Which Fixes an Oversized Photo File?

By ImgHeal · Updated

Choose the change that matches the destination's pixel and file-size requirements.

Read both limits

An upload form may restrict file bytes, pixel dimensions, or both. Check which condition your file exceeds. A dimension limit cannot reliably be fixed just by lowering export quality, and a file-size limit may remain after a small dimensional change.

Make a delivery copy

Resize when the image has more pixels than the destination needs. Adjust compression when dimensions are suitable but the file is too large. Work from the source for each trial rather than repeatedly shrinking and recompressing an already reduced copy.

Verify the exported result

Check the actual downloaded file's dimensions and bytes, then open it. Inspect faces and text at normal viewing size. Keep the high-quality master separate so a later print request does not have to start from the small upload version.

Check before you finish

  • Identify the exact exceeded limit.
  • Inspect the final exported file.
