How to Review Uniforms and Insignia in Restored Photos
By ImgHeal · Updated
Keep badges, lettering, and rank details tied to visible evidence rather than generated clarity.
Record the source appearance
Save close crops of insignia, buttons, ribbons, and lettering before editing. Note which details are genuinely readable. A restoration should not become the sole evidence for a rank, unit, school, or organization when the source cannot establish it.
Compare small structures
Check counts and arrangements rather than overall visual neatness. AI may create symmetrical or familiar-looking symbols that differ from the original. For monochrome colorization, treat uniform colors as interpretation unless reliable independent references support them.
Document identifications separately
Use records or knowledgeable family testimony to support any identification, and cite those notes in the archive. Keep the original crop available. Label reconstructed insignia so future users do not repeat a generated symbol as a historical fact.
Check before you finish
- Preserve unedited insignia crops.
- Support identifications with independent evidence.
