How to Preserve Useful Dates When Moving Photo Files
By ImgHeal · Updated
Distinguish camera capture dates, scan dates, file-system dates, and estimated historical dates.
Define the record
A copied file may receive a new modified or created date even though its embedded capture metadata remains. An old photograph's event date is usually separate from the date it was scanned.
Apply the system consistently
Record historical date estimates in the inventory and keep the original scan filename stable. When moving archives, copy a test folder and compare metadata fields before transferring everything.
Test that another person can use it
Do not rely on folder sorting alone to preserve chronology. Keep a move log, verify the destination, and retain the source copy until checks pass.
Check before you finish
- Separate event date from scan date.
- Test a small transfer first.
- Keep dates in an inventory.
