How to Photograph a Reflective Tintype

By ImgHeal · Updated

Use controlled angles and soft light to copy a reflective metal photograph without forcing it flat.

Plan the capture

Tintypes can be dark, reflective, bent, or held in a case. Do not polish or flatten the plate. Support it securely and observe how the image changes as the light and viewing angle move.

Make a complete digital master

Place the camera square to the image and use broad light from the side. Make several exposures if highlights or dark clothing disappear in one capture. Include the full plate and case in at least one master view.

Prepare the working copy

Choose the clearest capture for a working copy, while retaining the others as references. A brightened digital version can improve viewing but does not change the physical plate or verify details hidden by reflection.

Check before you finish

  • Do not polish the metal surface.
  • Try more than one light angle.
  • Keep a full-object master.
