How to Document an Uncertain Location in a Family Photo
By ImgHeal · Updated
Keep visible clues, family testimony, and generated image details in separate categories.
List source-visible clues
Save crops of readable signs, building shapes, landscape features, and inscriptions. Record exactly which details are visible in the untouched source. Do not use a newly legible AI-generated sign as independent confirmation of a town or street.
Compare references carefully
Look for dated maps, known family addresses, or another view of the location. Allow for changed buildings and different camera angles. Keep supporting references alongside the image identifier rather than embedding an unexplained location in the filename.
Express confidence in the caption
Use wording such as possibly or believed to be when the evidence is incomplete. Record who suggested the place and why. Update the public caption when better evidence arrives without losing the earlier research trail.
Check before you finish
- Save untouched crops of location clues.
- Explain the evidence behind a location claim.
