How to Keyword a Family Photo When the People Are Uncertain
By ImgHeal · Updated
A search label can outlive the tentative conversation that created it. Keep useful keywords while making sure a possible person's name does not quietly become an established identification on every copy.

Separate observable subjects from hypotheses
List facts that can be described without identifying the sitters: a group portrait, a visible occasion if established, or the collection from which the image came. Put candidate names in a research note with the source and reason for considering them. A keyword field usually lacks enough room to explain competing identities. Avoid adding every relative's surname in the hope of attracting a match; it makes later searches noisy and can make speculation appear more widely supported than it is.
Design a small uncertainty convention
Choose a collection convention that distinguishes confirmed subjects, unidentified people, and research candidates. Check your software's keyword export options before using a private candidate category. A local-only research tag can be useful if it truly remains out of the public export, but verify that behavior rather than trusting the name of the tag. In the public description, state the identification question plainly and provide the stable photo ID so readers can respond about the correct image.
Recheck tags when a conclusion changes
Inspect the embedded keywords on a sample delivered file, not only the catalogue's keyword panel. Remove unsupported identity labels from the sharing copy while retaining their history in the research log. If new evidence confirms or rejects a candidate, update the factual description and keyword set together. Record which shared versions may still carry the older label. A restoration that creates a more recognizable-looking face is not independent evidence for promoting a candidate name into the confirmed keyword list.
Check before sharing this record
- Separate observations from candidate names.
- Test whether private research tags export.
- Update captions and keywords together after a correction.

Questions about this restoration task
Can I use a question mark after a name as a keyword?
You can adopt that local convention, but another service may drop punctuation or display the name without context. Keep the uncertainty in a readable description and test the actual public export.
