Why a GIMP Filter Appears to Change Only Half of a Photo
By ImgHeal · Updated
A sharp vertical or horizontal division in a filter dialog can make a photograph look partly repaired. GIMP's Split view deliberately compares the treatment with the untreated image. Identify that comparison state before cloning across the line or changing a selection that may already be correct.

Look for the preview controls and divider
Check whether a filter dialog is open and whether Split view is enabled. Compare the visible divider with the boundary that concerned you. Move the preview divider using the documented controls and see whether the apparent repair boundary moves with it. Note whether the line is vertical or horizontal. A divider that follows the preview is different from a fixed selection edge, damaged scan, or mask boundary in the actual document.
Review the whole treatment before accepting it
Temporarily turn off Split view to inspect the full preview. Keep the ordinary Preview control and any active selection in mind: they affect different parts of the comparison. Check important faces, lettering, and background texture on both sides of the earlier division. In GIMP's documented filter workflow, confirmation and the choice of retained effect versus merged operation govern the result. Do not assume that seeing a preview means a completed file has been saved, and do not add a second identical filter merely because one side was untreated during comparison.
Verify the document and delivery image separately
After accepting the intended operation, inspect the complete document without the dialog's comparison overlay. If a fixed seam remains, investigate selection coverage or effect organization as a separate problem. Save the editable project and export a normal viewing copy, then reopen that output in another viewer. Confirm that the full intended area is treated and that no region was accidentally omitted. Retain the original scan so the approved change can be assessed without relying on a remembered split-screen preview.
Check the working document
- The boundary was tested as a preview divider.
- The full treatment was inspected before confirmation.
- The saved viewing copy was reopened independently.

Questions about this restoration task
Is Split view the same as filtering an active selection?
No. Split view is a comparison display. A selection can restrict the actual affected region, so check both controls when a boundary remains after the preview is closed.
