How to Check Color Banding in an Edited Photo
By ImgHeal · Updated
Find stepped bands in skies, walls, and gradients and avoid making them worse with repeated processing.
Identify where the problem begins
View the source and edit at 100 percent. Banding may come from limited source data, strong tone moves, compression, or a display preview. Check whether it appears in the actual exported file.
Create a safe diagnostic copy
Return to the highest-quality source and make adjustments in a higher-quality working file when possible. Avoid repeated JPEG saves and extreme contrast changes that spread gaps between tones.
Verify the corrected file
Inspect smooth backgrounds and skin on more than one display, then test the delivery export. Added noise can hide bands visually but does not restore missing tone information.
Check before you finish
- Inspect the real exported file.
- Return to the best source.
- Avoid repeated lossy saves.
