How to Check a Portrait Linked to a Grave or Memorial Record

By ImgHeal · Updated

A portrait attached to a grave or memorial record needs its own provenance check. Establish the commemorated person's identity and ask where the image came from before treating the association as confirmed. An official burial record and a user-supplied portrait can have different evidential strengths. A matching name alone does not settle same-name relatives or misattached photographs.

Record the record and image separately

Save the cemetery or memorial reference, documented name, dates, and any other identifiers relevant to the research. Record the portrait's uploader, stated source, and caption separately where available. Do not transfer every field into the photo record as if it were inscribed on the print. Check whether the page presents official archival information, volunteer transcription, or a later family contribution.

Test the candidate person

Compare birth or death details, relatives, service number, and place with other reliable records. For relevant war graves, CWGC guidance distinguishes burial or commemoration information from a complete account of where a person lived or died. Use the actual scope of the source. A portrait bearing a similar surname and uniform can support inquiry, but does not establish that it belongs to the same documented individual.

Trace the portrait back to a source

Ask the authorized contributor for a print, album reference, or earlier caption if the image's origin is unclear. Record the response and keep uncertainty visible in any restoration caption. Avoid publishing private contact or account information while citing the source. A cleaner face may aid family viewing, but should not make an unverified memorial-page attachment seem more authoritative than the evidence linking it to the commemorated person.

Before using this evidence

  • Record provenance and portrait provenance are separate.
  • Same-name candidates are checked with other identifiers.
  • The portrait attachment has documented support.

Questions about this restoration task

Is a portrait on an official memorial site automatically verified?

Check how that particular image was supplied and described. Official record fields and contributed photographs may have different sources; verify the connection instead of assuming the site's authority applies equally to every attachment.
