Check an Omeka S Exhibit That Uses Remote IIIF Photo Media
By ImgHeal · Updated
An Omeka S exhibit can display IIIF media served by another institution. That does not necessarily create an independent preservation copy on your server. Document the remote dependency and test the visitor route before relying on it for a reunion, class, or permanent family-history exhibit.

Record the external source precisely
Save the repository item page, IIIF resource reference, institutional credit, and access date in the publication notes. Identify which record describes the physical photograph and which address serves the digital image. Check the institution's published reuse conditions before preparing any local alternative. Do not infer permission to modify or upload the photo to another service merely because a viewer can display it. Keep the external source identity visible to readers, including when the image appears inside your own site's design.
Test the actual embedded resource
Omeka S documents adding IIIF image or presentation resources as media. Review the configured reference and open the public exhibit in a signed-out session. Check first-load behavior, zooming where offered, visible labels, and the route to the source record. Test on the intended display and network rather than only in the editor's warmed browser cache. If the image fails, distinguish a bad reference, remote availability problem, and site-rendering issue before replacing the source with an unrelated screenshot.
Prepare an honest fallback
For an event, decide what visitors should see if the remote service is unavailable. Where permitted, an approved local viewing derivative can provide continuity, clearly credited and linked to the source. Otherwise offer a descriptive placeholder and repository link. Retain the dependency note and review it periodically. If you publish an ImgHeal restoration separately, confirm that the source rights allow that processing and label the generated interpretation. Neither an embed nor a restoration transfers the institution's preservation responsibility or authenticates the underlying historical caption.
Check this workflow
- Record item and IIIF references separately.
- Test the signed-out embedded view.
- Use only permitted, clearly credited fallbacks.

Questions about this restoration task
Does embedding IIIF guarantee the image will always be available?
No. Remote services can change or become unavailable. Record the dependency and choose a lawful, clearly described contingency.
