How to Check a Family Photo Gallery After Moving Its Folder

By ImgHeal · Updated

A local gallery's opening page may copy successfully while its photographs stay behind. Check the complete package so relatives can browse the images without your original computer or internet connection.

Map the gallery's actual files

Identify the opening HTML page and the folders containing full-size images, thumbnails, styles, and other required assets. Make a separate delivery copy of the whole arrangement. Note whether an album generator produced it and whether that generator supplies export instructions. A page that opens is only one part of the package; its navigation and images may depend on several adjacent folders.

Check how image locations are written

Relative links are interpreted from a base location, as described in MDN's URL guidance. For example, images/portrait.jpg expects an images folder relative to the relevant page. A link to an absolute path on your computer does not automatically identify a file on a relative's device. Preserve the intended hierarchy when moving the package, and use the gallery tool's supported export options rather than renaming folders at random.

Test the copied folder without the source

Open the delivery copy from a different ordinary folder or a suitable second computer. Disconnect the network for an offline test. Check thumbnails, full-image links, next and previous navigation, and a page inside a subfolder. A cached picture on the original computer can conceal a missing dependency. If the gallery requires a local server or browser features unavailable from a file, consult its own deployment instructions rather than weakening browser protections.

Package instructions with the checked version

Give the recipient a clear starting filename and ask them to retain the supplied folder structure. Include a plain image-folder alternative if a self-contained gallery is not compatible with their setup. Keep the archival source photos separate from delivery thumbnails. After any new export or filename correction, repeat the offline test so the handed-over folder, rather than an earlier working version, is the one known to function.

Check the delivered result

  • Keep the opening page and required assets together.
  • Check relative paths from nested pages.
  • Test the delivery copy offline away from the source.

Questions about this restoration task

Why does the gallery work on my computer but show broken images elsewhere?

Its links may still reference your original folders, remote resources, or missing assets. Test the complete copied package to identify which dependency did not travel.
