How to Find a Better Copy of a Messaging-App Photo
By ImgHeal
Recover the best available source before trying to enhance a shared picture.
Ask for the source file
A chat image may have been resized or recompressed before reaching you. Ask the sender for the original camera file, scan, or a file attachment that preserves it. A screenshot of the chat adds another generation of loss and may include interface elements.
Compare actual files
Check pixel dimensions and view each candidate at the same scale. A larger file size alone does not prove a better source; an enlarged screenshot can be bigger than the original attachment. Look for block patterns, ringing around edges, and missing facial detail.
Edit the best surviving version
If no original survives, retain the chat copy and make an edited version for viewing. Gentle cleanup may reduce distracting artifacts, but it cannot verify detail removed during compression. Share the source alongside a heavily reconstructed result if identification matters.
Before you finish
- Request the original attachment.
- Compare pixels and visible detail.
- Avoid recapturing a chat preview.

Keep the original scan. Upload a separate digital copy, review ImgHeal’s generated result, and decide whether it suits your needs.
