Matte or Glossy: Which Finish Suits a Restored Photo?
By ImgHeal · Updated
Choose a print finish by viewing distance, lighting, handling, and the character of the source.
Define the finished object
Glossy finishes can show strong contrast and fine detail but also reflections and fingerprints. Matte finishes reduce glare but may look softer. Lustre sits between them, depending on the lab.
Prepare a dedicated print file
Consider where the print will hang and whether it sits behind glass. A textured, grainy source may feel different on a highly glossy surface than a smooth studio portrait.
Check a proof before the final order
Order the same small image on two papers when the choice matters. Compare in the actual display light rather than judging only from online descriptions.
Check before you finish
- Consider glare and handling.
- Match finish to the source character.
- Compare physical samples.
