How to Link a Photograph to a Family Tree Record
By ImgHeal · Updated
Connect a photo to people and events without losing its source, uncertainty, or edit history.
Gather evidence before editing
Assign the photo a stable identifier and list the people in left-to-right order. Record who supplied the image, where the original is held, and whether each name is confirmed or tentative.
Record the research clearly
Add the identifier and source note to the family tree entry rather than uploading an unlabeled restored crop alone. Include the approximate date, place, and relationship to the event when supported.
Keep conclusions separate from guesses
Keep the original scan, restored derivative, and family tree citation connected. If an identification changes, update the note without overwriting the earlier evidence trail.
Check before you finish
- Use a stable photo identifier.
- Mark tentative names.
- Link the tree entry to the source scan.
