Why a Lightroom Catalog Backup Does Not Replace a Photo Backup
By ImgHeal · Updated
A Lightroom backup can preserve the record of your edits while the photographs it refers to remain elsewhere. Recovery needs both parts if you want to reopen and export the family images later.

List the project's separate components
Identify the Lightroom Classic catalog, relevant companion data, and the actual original-image folders. Record their locations and the disks they depend on. A catalog is not a container holding every imported scan. Adobe explains that moving a catalog does not itself move the photographs, so a small catalog backup should not be counted as another complete copy of the family's original image files.
Check coverage for each component
Inspect the catalog-backup destination and the separate backup job covering the originals. Compare their last successful dates with recent imports and edits. A catalog backup from today paired with photo folders from last month can leave new scans missing. Include folders on external or network storage when they contain originals, and note which locations need to be connected for the relevant backup job to run successfully.
Test with a disposable recovered setup
Use the documented Lightroom recovery process to open a copied catalog in a suitable test location. Supply a restored copy of a small original-image folder and check whether the catalog can locate it. Do not relink the live catalog to a temporary test folder by accident. Open an image in Develop and make a temporary export, since familiar Library previews alone do not establish that a recoverable original is available.
Keep restoration derivatives traceable
Record which retained original produced an ImgHeal output or later manual edit imported into the catalog. Back up those delivered files and useful working projects as well as the catalog's references to them. Keep the test notes with the handoff instructions, including which disks and paths were required. A relative should be able to distinguish a missing original from a catalog-opening problem instead of assuming all photographs disappeared together.
Check before you finish
- Inventory catalogs and originals as separate components.
- Compare backup dates for both parts.
- Test Develop access and an export from recovered originals.

Questions about this restoration task
Do visible catalog previews prove that the originals were backed up?
No. Previews can remain visible when originals are unavailable. Verify actual original-file recovery and a usable export from the recovered setup.
