Check Disconnected Regions in GIMP Select By Color
By ImgHeal · Updated
Select By Color can include matching pixels across disconnected regions. That makes it different from a selection limited to one connected area. Before changing a background or stain, inspect other similarly colored objects so the same adjustment does not quietly alter skin, fabric, or writing elsewhere.

Identify similar colors across the image
Inspect the whole photograph before selecting. A pale background may resemble a shirt, a white border, or highlights on a face. A brown stain may overlap legitimate sepia tones. Mark which areas should change and which should remain fixed. Work on a duplicate layer with the source visible as a reference, and avoid assuming that a semantic object such as background has a unique color signature.
Inspect the global selection
GIMP documents Select By Color as selecting similar colors across the image rather than only connected neighbors. Click the intended sample and review the entire selected set at a useful scale. Adjust the threshold deliberately and check the actual sampling layer. A clean boundary near the click point does not demonstrate that distant regions are excluded. Use a mask preview if the moving selection outline makes small inclusions difficult to notice.
Constrain the intended correction
Combine the color-based selection with a region mask or manual refinement when the task needs spatial limits. Apply a modest test adjustment and inspect distant skin, text, and fabric as well as the intended stain. If matching colors cannot be separated without losing real detail, choose another editing method. Preserve the source and editable mask, and record the scope of the accepted correction. Color similarity is a useful selection clue, not evidence that every matched pixel represents the same material, damage type, or historical color.
Check this workflow before using the result
- Locate similar legitimate colors.
- Review the whole selection.
- Constrain the adjustment spatially.

Questions about this restoration task
Why were separate white objects selected together?
