How to Prepare a Photo for a Frame's Mat Opening
By ImgHeal · Updated
Measure the visible opening rather than assuming the frame label describes the exposed image.
Measure the visible area
Check the mat opening and how much of the print it overlaps. A nominal print size may include an area hidden behind the mat. Record the intended orientation and keep important subjects away from the hidden edges.
Preview a safe delivery copy
Use a duplicate and mark the approximate visible opening in a layout preview. Shift the crop to preserve hair, hands, and context. If the composition cannot fit, consider a different mat or intentional borders rather than distorting the photograph.
Check before final assembly
Use a test print or placement preview to verify what remains visible. Avoid adhesives or improvised mounting treatments on an original historical print. Frame a suitable reproduction when you want a display copy while preserving the original separately.
Check before you finish
- Measure the mat's visible opening.
- Keep meaningful details out of covered edges.
