How to Review a Focus-Stacked Copy of an Old Photograph
By ImgHeal · Updated
A focus stack combines parts of several captures to increase the range that appears sharp. It is a composite, not one exposure. Compare it with the contributing frames and a complete reference for seams, doubled detail, or shifted scale. Keep the original object supported; forcing a fragile print flat is not a suitable shortcut.

Confirm the capture problem
Inspect whether safe camera alignment and an appropriate capture setting can record the needed detail in one frame. A focus stack may be useful for a nonflat object, but it introduces alignment and selection choices. Adobe distinguishes Auto-Blend Stack Images from panorama assembly. Retain all contributing files and record their sequence. Do not assume a flat-looking result means the physical print was planar or that every sharp feature came from the same capture.
Compare each plane at sensitive boundaries
Inspect the sharp region in every source and locate where the final composite changes between them. Lens behavior, movement, and framing differences can alter scale or position. Look at faces, fine writing, mount edges, and transitions over raised areas. A local crisp patch may be paired with a false seam nearby. Keep a wider overview so an attractive facial crop does not hide distortion of the object's overall shape or border.
Retain a qualified source set
Save the editable stack if available, the original captures, and a clearly named composite export. Document any cleanup or local deformation needed after merging. Check the actual output at the intended viewing size and include its composite role in the restoration notes. If a region remains unreliable, retain a softer direct-capture alternative. More uniform sharpness can aid display, but it does not by itself certify historical fidelity or recover features absent from every contributing source frame.

Questions about this restoration task
Is a focus-stacked file an untouched master capture?
It is a constructed combination of captures. Retain the individual source files and explain the stack's role rather than describing it as an unprocessed single exposure.
