How to Keep Different Photos from Overwriting Each Other in One Export Folder

By ImgHeal · Updated

Two album folders can each contain an image named scan001.jpg. Combining their exports into one folder may create a collision even when both photographs are important and neither is a duplicate.

Find repeated names before exporting

Review the selected source folders and look for basenames repeated across albums, scanner sessions, or different family contributors. Compare actual pictures, dimensions, and folder context before labeling any pair a duplicate. Reused camera and scanner names are common enough that a familiar filename is a weak identity. Record the parent-folder association for each important image before a flattened output removes that visible context.

Choose a stable destination naming pattern

Use a photo ID, album identifier, or deliberate sequence that distinguishes the exported files. Apply the pattern to working exports rather than renaming protected source scans without a plan. Keep a simple source-to-delivery mapping for images whose names change. If your export application offers automatic numbering, check where numbering begins and whether separate batches reuse the same sequence when placed in one common folder.

Inspect collision behavior in a small test

Export a few known same-name candidates into an empty staging folder. Read replacement, skip, and keep-both prompts carefully. Microsoft documents that duplicate names can also cause conflicts during cloud transfer, so a locally successful export is not the only stage worth checking. Do not accept a blanket overwrite option for a mixed family collection unless you have intentionally identified the exact file each replacement should supersede.

Reconcile the final delivery

Compare the delivered list with the expected photo IDs and open both members of the original collision examples. Make sure automatic suffixes still map to the correct sources rather than silently changing which photo a caption refers to. Keep the mapping beside the delivered files or in the project record. A recipient should be able to request a clearer scan by identity, even though the original folder hierarchy no longer appears in the shared package.

Check before you finish

  • Check repeated basenames across source folders.
  • Assign unique names to staged delivery copies.
  • Verify collision examples and their source mapping.

Questions about this restoration task

Can automatic keep-both numbering solve every identity problem?

It may preserve bytes, but the new suffixes still need a mapping to the correct photographs and captions. Verify the result instead of treating generated names as meaningful identities.
