How to Compare Two Photo Exports Fairly
By ImgHeal · Updated
Match dimensions and viewing conditions before deciding which export is better.
Normalize the comparison
Open both files at equal scale and confirm they show the same crop. One image may look clearer simply because it is displayed larger. Record differences in dimensions, format, and file size before evaluating compression settings.
Inspect difficult regions
Compare a face, fine hair or fabric, a strong edge, and a smooth background. Look for blocking, halos, and banding. More contrast can create a stronger impression without preserving more detail, so keep the source visible as a reference.
Decide for the delivery task
Choose the smallest copy that preserves the details needed for that destination, or retain a larger copy when printing requires it. Keep the master and note the settings of the chosen export. There is no universal best byte size for every photograph.
Check before you finish
- Match scale and crop.
- Compare several different textures.
