How to Handle Pen Marks in a Digital Photo Copy

By ImgHeal · Updated

Distinguish unwanted marks from meaningful annotations before editing them out.

Document the writing

Capture or retain the full marked image and note whether the writing identifies people, dates, or events. Ask the owner about its significance where possible. A scribble may be distracting visually but still form part of the photograph's family history.

Repair only a derivative

In a manual editor, use local corrections on a separate layer and sample texture from the same surface. Marks crossing eyes or lettering leave less reliable information than marks on a plain background. Inspect reconstructed features carefully.

Retain context with the result

Keep a marked source and a named clean-display copy. Save important annotation transcriptions in the index. If sharing a cleaned image, avoid implying that removed writing was never present on the object or that reconstructed details are certain.

Check before you finish

  • Record annotations before removal.
  • Save a clearly labeled display copy.
