How to Digitize a Photograph Printed in a Newspaper
By ImgHeal · Updated
Keep the article context while making a useful copy of a halftone image.
Capture the page context
Record the publication name, date, caption, and page number if known. Capture the full clipping before cropping the photograph. Do not infer a publication date from the scan date or discard an adjoining caption that identifies the people.
Expect printed dots
Newspaper photographs may contain a visible dot pattern rather than continuous photographic detail. Test a descreen setting or gentle cleanup on a copy. Inspect faces and lettering because attempts to eliminate every dot can smear the remaining information.
Separate illustration from evidence
Save the original clipping capture and a labeled enhanced derivative. Any AI-created facial detail is not a recovered press negative. If identity or wording matters, cite the original clipping and transcribe only what can be supported from it.
Check before you finish
- Retain publication and caption details.
- Do not treat generated faces as source evidence.
